Large South-Facing Garden
Hitchin, UK
The design for this unique Mediterranean Garden, situated at the intersection of a traditional-style property surrounded by a horse paddock, was a challenge. A recent building construction project sees the addition of an architect-designed extension, successfully linking the property better to the plot. Due to its vast 11,000sqm size and the fact that it faces south whilst being exposed to extreme heat and wind conditions, combined with its awkward position within the plot, posed a real challenge. This garden design by Bedmal creates a magical, inviting space that overcomes these challenges with a series of three squares using the natural lines and dimensions of the property and the new angled extension, as well as upscaled yew hedges that provide planters for mature Olive Trees and White Hydrangeas.
Budget: UNDISCLOSED
Design Fee: No upfront fee, forming part of the overall build contract.
The center of the garden features a Breedon Gravel area with a sculptural fire, lending a warm, textured tone to the space. The existing Sandstone is utilised and matched throughout the design, adding to the traditional feel of the property. A simple lighting scheme in the evenings only adds to the garden's charm and magic. The garden features a table that is positioned away from the new window, allowing for views to be maintained while providing shade from the Olive trees during the hottest times of the year.
A secondary Olive tree sections off a proposed outdoor kitchen area, and a simple water feature is added to the center of a rhombus-shaped box hedge. This creates intimacy and a courtyard feel to the scheme, while leading to the front aspect that will receive the best evening sun. The planting scheme is simple and low maintenance, making it a practical choice for such an extensive plot.
Overall, this unique garden design brings the charm and beauty of the Mediterranean to the heart of a traditional British property, surrounded by horse paddocks, making it a truly special outdoor space.
